If there is ONE course that can drive home school moms to crazyland it has GOT to be:  MATH!

math teacher

Even if your child is a math whiz, when it comes to teaching them math, most kids resist MOM teaching it! So even if you're die hard you aren't doing online curricula, you may find yourself hunting for a Math curriculum, that ties into your lessons! As we're fast approaching Algebra (aka high school math-the other Math that makes moms (and dads) run for the computer), I knew it was going to have to be on my agenda, so I was very thrilled to be able to check out a new program, that offers different options, based on your families needs: Family Math Package from A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) !

A+ Interactive Math logo

The goal of A+ TutorSoft is to help students, of all ability and grade levels, reach their educational potential, by offering engaging, easy to follow and easily accessible expert instruction in math, for grades 1-6, including pre-algebra and algebra! Using a learning platform that combines voice, visual and text-based instructions, A+ TutorSoft makes learning Math easy! And thanks to it's proven methodology of test-grade-review, you know your child is getting what they are being taught, before they move on to something else!

There are 2 main packages offered by A+ TutorSoft. let's look at the one that we reviewed first,  A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) :

Family Math

As you can see from the above picture, the Family Math Package covers all of the levels, and allows you to place your child where YOU think they need to be, by grade level. This program does NOT pre-test student to place them in the program. I had selected this program to review, of the 2 available, as I knew that Miss Grace while doing 6th grade math, needed tutoring with some parts of 5th grade math, so that way I could let her jump around to different parts of the program, as needed, and then make more changes over the Summer, as she progresses (to gulp ALGEBRA! EEEK). Plus you can have up to 10 kids on a family plan (though you are charged a discounted rate for EACH child added).

Each grade level in the Family Package includes a full year's worth of comprehensive math subjects(that meet or exceed state and federal guidelines), with video lessons at each subject with matching interactive review and testing. If Miss Grace needs to jump around, it is very simple. She can just click on the Table of Contents,on the left side of the screen (which you can see above), expand the chapters, find the subject she needs, and click into the lesson she needs to work on. Easy peasy!

computer errorI do need to add in a note about a major program requirement, that you DO need to know about: Adobe Flash IS required for either of the A+ Interactive Math programs to run. Without it, you will NOT get the video lessons! As you probably are aware, most tablet's (and other mobile devices) default browser do NOT support Adobe Flash! A+ TutorSoft recommends downloading one that does support flash, such as "Puffin Web Browser”, which is highly optimized for video viewing, and has malware protection. It is free to download from the AppStore and GooglePlay.

Also, during the interactive Q & A quiz, if your child is given questions that require them to type the answer in (not multiple choice), they have to click on the frog’s belly to submit the answer. Otherwise, it won't count. I had warned Miss Grace about this but she forgot on the second day and lost a lot of answers and time because of that. So I would recommend sitting with your child through the first 3-4 lessons, to make sure they are completing them correctly.

family package kids dashboard

When you sign up for the program, you set up a parent AND child dashboard. Your child does NOT have access to your dashboard, unless you sign them into YOUR account. They will be given their own sign in name and password, so they can be tracked. correctly. Once your child signs in, they will see what program they can access (you see 2 programs above as I went ahead and signed up for the FREE Adaptive Math placement test, as I was trying to figure out if I needed to move her into Algebra for 6th grade, or do another year of pre-Algebra). There is also a how-to use the program (big red button) that I HIGHLY recommend your child view first, so they understand HOW to use the program (like the aforementioned frog issue)!

Then once they click their package, they are taken to a launch screen. When they click launch, a new screen is opened with the program. Again they have the option of a quick tutorial before starting. If not needed, then they can click straight into the lesson they left off at, or start the next one. The one complaint that Miss Grace had was the screen size, which gets cut off on her laptop computer, leaving no playback controls. Many times she has has to holler, "I need a break", and then when she came back, had to restart at the beginning of that section again. This is why I started printing out the worksheets for her to answer instead of the online quizzes, it was just easier to work on them, and then go back and listen again to the lesson, if she needed to. THEN I realized she could downsize the screen size and get the control buttons AND the button to start the Q&A, if she didn't need the whole lesson. Head slap! Again, a valid reason to sit through initially with your student!

Something else we discovered, was that she had to WAIT for all the answers to be shown on the multiple choice sections on the Q&A, before she could answer. For a kid who does math in her head 8 out of 10 times, that was a but frustrating for her. The one thing Miss Grace really likes about the online testing is that if she gets the answer wrong, she can try again, OR go straight to review the answer and see WHY she got it wrong. For areas where she has issues, this is REALLY important! This interactive review method automatically re-teaches concepts, giving your child real-time feedback AND enhances their learning, the same as if you were there teaching them! Something else that encourages is when they get an answer right, they are told 'good job' with a emoji. Also kids get to earn certificates when they complete a section, boosting their self esteem again.

miss grace paper test

If your child doesn't like the online tests, you can print out worksheets and exams, and use them instead. Miss Grace prefers Math tests on paper, for some weird reason, so this works for her. You are allowed to go back and note that those chapters were completed, so the program is kept up to date, and I can record those paper scores! Additionally, you can buy a Student Workbook that has all the quizzes and exams, AND answers, if your student prefers to handle their testing that way- it is cheaper than downloading all of them and printing them! (You can also purchase a copy of the textbook, with all the lessons in it, if your prefer to have it for reference).

The parent/admin dashboard allows me to go in and see how she has not only done on the online work, but to add in the grades from any of the printed material, so an accurate review of her work can be seen. There was definitely a learning curve with the program for her (and we also had some internet connectivity issues the past 2 weeks), that affected her scoring as well. but overall, I'm happy to see that she is where I thought she would be, and that the program IS helping her with the issues she was having.

The parent dashboard also lets me add more students, change her levels at any time, and use their templates to create additional worksheets for  practice in problem areas, or to create timed condition exams (for standardized test practice). I can also lock out the solution guides, to make her go back and review lessons, which I can do when the progress reports don't match up to what I might be seeing her actually doing. this let's ME make sure she isn't working around the system (yes, let's admit it, smart kids like doing things easy too!).

a grade

Overall I am probably a bit more happy with the Family Math Package from A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) than Miss Grace is. Initially the frustration with browsers and internet connections gave her some frustrations, but once those got worked out, the program flowed much better for her. While you would expect being dyslexic, that the online program would be great for her, she has an affinity for the math text we've been using and she is a creature of severe habits, so it's hard breaking her from a traditional format. I think as she starts NEW lessons, versus going over issue spots, she will see how better it is to have the video explanation, especially when we hit algebra. Those videos will be a great refresher for me too! LOL If not for the flash issue, we'd give the program an A+!
